Eastern Balkans and the Bulgarian Renaissance
A two-day excursion in the footsteps of Vasil Levski, Zahari Zograf and Nikola Fichev. A pleasant combination of natural and historical landmarks.
On the first day, we visit Troyan Monastery, which is a stauropegial and the third largest monastery in the country. The monastery was founded in 1600 by Athos monks. Many Bulgarian Renaissance figures and the revolutionary stayed there, and Vasil Levski created a secret committee. Some of the frescoes belong to the brush of Zahari Zograf, including portraits of donors, the scene "The Wheel of Life" and a self-portrait of Zograf himself. Patriarch Maxim is buried in Troyan Monastery. Next, we visit the cave "Saeva Dupka" rich in rock formations. In the late afternoon, we arrive in the town of Lovech and visit the old quarter of Varosh, the Fortress, the monument to Levski and the Covered Bridge of Nikola Fichev. Overnight stay in the town of Lovech.
On the second day, we visit the Krushun Waterfalls – a beautiful water cascade in the Devetashko plateau. At noon, we depart for Veliko Tarnovo. In the old capital, we take a walking tour of the Samovodska Bazaar, with a visit to the masterpieces of Nikola Fichev – the House with the Monkey, Hadji Nikoli’s Inn, the Museum of the National Assembly, and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.
